First of all, The women-only train violates constitutional rights. In fact, women-only trains in japan are not enforced by law and men entering women-only train cars cannot be punished. It is completely volunteer on men to respect the reserved cars for women. According to the european legal system, both genders must have equal access to public service. Since men and women pay the same ticket prize, there must be an equal number of cars for both genders. Any erosion of constitutional rights is dangerous.

Second, A women-only train car would introduce a double-standard for safety between men and women. Most crimes commited on traines are not specifically sexual in nature, but rather violent. Men are more often victims of violent crimes than women. The introduction of women-only train cars may lead to reduced safety for men through the reduction of common safety measures, such as security personal. In that moment a double-standard for safety is introduced, safety becomes a relative factor, allowing a reduction on the perceived stronger gender instead an improvement on the perceived weaker gender. Such a situation occured in history several times with lethal consequences for the male gender. Does somebody want to repeat history?

Third, Women-only train cars would lead to the collective stereotyping of men as potential criminals. Such stereotypes could easily manifest over time, especially in children. The european constitution forbids gender stereotyping.

Consequently, women-only trains would violate constitutional laws in at least 2 points. Independent of legal aspects, women-only trains are a shame for the countries using them. Every citizen has the same right for safety independent of its gender.

How should people act when their politicians fail? Wikipedia shows how people acting co-operatively can create a first rate resource. As we cannot rely on our political systems to solve this problem we need to explore all the other ways in which people can co-operate to solve this problem. And we should engage with the traditional political system as well.

Mark's web site cannot be praised too highly. The advice in it allowed me to make a trip from the UK to Norway earlier this year which I could not have planned without the site.

The trip took a couple of days, but that included time for sightseeing on the way. So much better than the horror that is being treated like dirt by the airlines. Some people think travelling by air is glamorous, have they ever done it?

Please don't make rail travel as nauseous as air travel. Eurostar are an example of how not to do rail travel, with their check-ins and "security" rubbish. They are trains, not ground travelling planes.
